Description:

The search module is one of the gems in Drupal's crown. It is elegantly architected and very solid in terms of its theoretical foundation. It is also one of the least understood components.

I will show you how Drupal handles search and how it can be extended and customized. Then, Doug Green will show you the work he's been doing on CCK and Views assisted searching.

This presentation will be broadcast dojo style (with VNC, SkypeCast and IRC). Check here for more details closer to the event.

Lead by:

Robert Douglass and Doug Green

For us europeans that can't get there, could you by any chance do a article about this topic? Or if possible do a screencast on the dojo?

*please*

This is something I would like to get my head around :)

Robert,

Can we collaberate on some work here as well as the presentation

I had hoped to work on documentation outlining the use CCK, views, views_fastsearch, daterange, and views_filterblock to create alternate search forms. And when I saw the call for papers, this seemed like a natural presentation for me. However, I see that you've beat me to the punch!

For Drupal 6 I had hoped to work on the Drupal core search and offer a proposed change that uses the basics from views_fastsearch. I think I've got something in views_fastsearch that could considerably speed up searching (mostly by creating SQL that does not use temporary tables).

Are you the maintainer of the core search technology? If you are, I'd like to build something for D6 then get your feedback.

Can we collaberate on the presentation?

Thanks!

World, Doug and I will be doing this presentation together.

Dunno if I'll be there or not, but we think our integration
with the Google Search Appliance is kinda fun ...

I'm very interested in Lucene/Zend Framework ideas as well.

For those interested in Lucene search: http://groups.drupal.org/lucene-and-nutch

I'm interested in discussing how to integrate drupal with SOLR. Perhaps the topic could be expanded beyond just SOLR and include other LUCENE-based tools as well.

I also hope to roll an article or two out of it.

thank you for the dojo style broadcast. then more of us can attend! (and not just watch it later)

Any clues as to how to connect for the broadcast?

I'll atone for my sin of promising too much by writing a kick-ass article for everybody.

My slides, video presentation, and link to a more robust demo are here: Drupal Search: Core API; CCK & Views (second half by Doug Green).
