Building Dupal Proficiency

Looking for some insight into what it takes to be able to build proficiency in set-up, administration, and trouble-shooting.

I used to be an active graphic designer and the read/write web phenomenon really pulled me more towards the social sector and non-profits and I actually work as a case manager now in housing issues. I am ok at poking around 'under the hood' on my Macs and have managed to get drupal going several times by dumb luck it seems, but when I hit a snag, I don't know what I'm doing enough to fix it. I have this burning desire to actually become proficient with Drupal but I don't know if I am cut out for it beyond poking around on a drupal administration page. Which leads me think there are two levels of proficency: developer type, back end understanding with setting up and maintaining the databases, etc, and site administration. I don't know enough to say they can even be mutually exclusive, or do you really have to understand PHP and be a solid techie to really administer a drupal site?

One of the best ways to build proficiency is to try and replicate and fix other people's problems. Either in the issue queue or the forums. Starting with forum posted problems gets you a wide variety of initial feedback but the issue queue can solve long term issue's.

Perhaps rather then a presentation something like this could be a general session... 'guided talk' with a moderator? I'm sure that the question raised is common across the various CMS's.

I think not. Once a Drupal site is up and running, administration isn't difficult. I think understanding the Drupal language/vocabulary is the biggest speed bump.
