try refreshing the page where you see the access denied error. it's possible that you're hitting a browser or drupal cache for that page even though you're now logged in.
try logging out/in and then closing/reopening the browser.
try clearing cookies.
the fact that you were able to comment as a logged in user suggests something wrong with cache or session, rather than a cookie or proxy type problem...
i was able to register just now, so i don;t think it's a systemic problem...

The other "register" is for "register a user account" and that won't work while you're logged in. :)
I'll adjust the message so that goes away when you're logged in, to alleviate confusion.
